Rio Grande Valley, Texas Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr. called on his constituents to send prayers instead of voting during his reelection in 2020. The announcement comes days after an interview with News Center 23 where he announced that he “does not believe in the separation of church and state.”

“Like I said, what’s the point of government if we can’t change the meaning of the Constitution based on my personal interpretation of what God calls me to do?” the senator said. “That’s why instead of going to the polls, I’m asking my constituents to pray for my reelection.”

The strategy has been questioned by his advisers and supporters, but the senator is firm in his stance calling it “the ultimate act of faith.”
