Brownsville city commissioners will formally consider relocating the Jefferson Davis Memorial on Tuesday.

The vote comes after local residents have circulated an online petition for more than two years that gathered more than 5,200 signatures in support of relocating the monument to a museum.

“What do you think the monument tells families when they are enjoying the park?” The petition reads. “We have a growing population of African-Americans in this community. This monument does not welcome the descendants of those who’ve been enslaved and oppressed in the past.

Last week, the memorial was defaced with the words “No Trump! No KKK! No Fascist USA!” were spray-painted across its plaque.
