Spaces and events that center LGBTQ women are rare— more so in the Rio Grande Valley. I have often heard friends observe the lack of spaces where LGBTQ women can go and feel right at home.
Even within queer Valley spaces, men are usually at the center. LEZday Wednesday/MiercoLEZ is hoping to change that.
LEZday Wednesday/MiercoLEZ describes what will be a series of events intentionally centering lesbians, queer people, and gender non-conforming/non-binary friends. It is set to debut Feb. 14 at Yerberia Cultura in McAllen with lively gatherings following the 2nd Wednesday of every month.
Vanessa Vega and Dani Marrero Hi came up with the idea of LEZday Wednesday/MiercoLEZ.
“I’ve never heard of any other events like MiercoLEZ,” Vega said. “It was a moment between my partner and I where we (both) wished (for) an event where LGBTQ women could get to meet new people and have fun.”
When talking to Vega, she stressed how important it was for this event to have both a fun and safe atmosphere for all of the attendees.
Mimi Martinez, who currently resides in McAllen and is a member of South Texans for Reproductive Justice, plans on attending and is excited to see that an event centering lesbians will be happening at a popular space in the RGV.
“I’m interested in it because it makes me happy to see Yerberia open up spaces for lesbians and queer folks to have fun and express their love within a safe space,” Martinez said. “There are very few lesbian bars and spaces that highlight (women) love so it is exciting to see an event like this in the RGV.”
Esther Martinez, the lead guitarist and vocalist to the local punk group Fantástico, has been a regular at Yerberia Cultura since literally the first day it opened in the Summer of 2016. As a frequent regular at Yerberia and as a lesbian, she was immediately intrigued when she saw that this event would be a part of Yerberia Cultura’s 2018 schedule.
“I feel comfortable going to Yerberia on any given day of the week, but it’s nice to have one night dedicated to women of the LGBTQIA+ community,” Esther Martinez said. “It’ll be even more of a safe space for someone that might not feel comfortable going to a bar or event they aren’t familiar with.”
While Yerberia Cultura has hosted different LGBTQ events like Queerceañera, Drag Out HIV!, and BLOOM, this will the first time an event centers LGBTQ women.
The evening will include different types of games and icebreakers and will also feature Vega as the DJ. She tells attendees to expect dance music for the occasion.
Since the first event will land on Valentine’s Day, the theme of the first event will be love. The creation of a space that centers LGBTQ women is something that is very important to Vega. She hopes this will not only encourage more events like these but also bring her community closer together.
“Having these spaces is crucial to me because it gives LGBTQ women a comfortable environment to mingle,” Vega said. “I’m hoping these types of events help bring people together or help someone find their special someone.”
