On March 24, more than 800 events worldwide will take place to protest gun violence in schools and communities, according to the official website of March For Our Lives. The campaign is led by the students and survivors of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida that occurred on Feb. 14.

The marches will urge Congress “to pass legislation that will protect and save children from gun violence,” as stated in the petition with more than 246,000 signatures.

In the Rio Grande Valley, three events will take place: Mission, McAllen, and Brownsville.

“March For Our Lives is created by, inspired by, and led by students across the country who will no longer risk their lives waiting for someone else to take action to stop the epidemic of mass school shootings that has become all too familiar,” the campaign stated on the website.

The widely shared petition lists three demands for Congress. The demands are to ban the sale of assault weapons, prohibit the sale of high-capacity magazines, and to “(close) the loophole in our background check law that allows dangerous people who shouldn’t be allowed to purchase firearms to slip through the cracks and buy guns online or at gun shows.”
