5. August 11 – Community Camp Outs

Event description:

“The AUGUST 11 Community Camp Out. ahead of our RECLAIM THE RIVER festival is now FREE!!! In addition, we have about a dozen tents available for use on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to reserve a tent, you must REGISTER ONLINE and complete the liability waiver/release.

The Camp Out will begin at from 6 pm, Saturday, August 11, at the National Butterfly Center. There will be optional planned outdoor activities, such as night hikes, owl searches and black lighting for insects and other creatures of the night, all led by trained staff.

This is the perfect camping opportunity for beginners, who may be uncertain about striking out on their own, as well as for experienced campers who just want to stay, here, in the midst of the Lower Rio Grande Wildlife Conservation Corridor.

Pre-registration for the community camp-outs are required. This can be done online at www.NationalButterflyCenter.org. Additional details about these camp-outs are available online as well.”

6. August 12 – Reclaim the River: Beach Party on the Banks of the Rio Grande

Event description:

“Join us for a FREE day of fun at the National Butterfly Center! We’re hosting a “beach party” on the banks of the Rio Grande River! Pack a picnic and the whole family for a variety of great activities, like Segway test drives, sand castle building with Sandyfeet, fishing, bird walks and guided hikes, a hayride, Project Wild Aquatic at our new wetland, guerrilla gardening, a native wildlife petting zoo, tug o’ war over an open mud pit and MORE! Bring your bikes and beach chairs for outdoor exploration, sunbathing, butterflying and a our blessing of the river, once a vibrant recreational area that will soon be cut off behind the Border Wall. Families interested in camping out the night before are also invited to sleep over under the stars with our staff, and experience the beauty and tranquility of this wild and wonderful place as few others have. This event will commemorate the one-year anniversary of the March to Save Mission. We will have food vendors and add participants as we receive their commitments.”
