1. November 14 – Edcouch-Elsa Walkouts 50th anniversary: March & panel

8 AM – 10:30 AM

107 N Mile 4 W, Edcouch, TX 78538

Event description:

“The Edcouch-Elsa High School Walkouts of November 14, 1968, was a defining moment in Rio Grande Valley history and a key component in the Chicano Civil Rights Movement as the event provided an entire community with the reassurance that their voices could and did make a difference.

The heroic Edcouch-Elsa Walkouts were a combustion of the many years of experiencing racism, segregationist policies, and discrimination at the hands of the Anglo educators and administrators. The Mexican American students, however, realized their own potential even if others did not and had the courage to envision Edcouch-Elsa as a great place to receive an education.

Fifty years later we celebrate the fruit of their heroic actions.

It is because of the student’s dedication to their community, determination to fight for a better future, and selflessness that we are able to exercise many of our rights and freedoms today in the Rio Grande Valley. They are heroes of the Rio Grande Valley and the Edcouch- Elsa High School Walkout is one of the most important historical events of the 20th century.

Join the student participants of the 1968 student walkout as they share their experiences with community members and current Edcouch-Elsa high school students and staff.

Agenda:
8 AM – Welcome and historical context (E-E Old High School on the corner of 107 and Yellowjacket Dr.)
8:45 AM – Commemorative March
9 AM – Walkout participant panel (E-E Performing Arts Center)

This commemoration will include a morning event and an evening event. RSVP for the evening event here: https://goo.gl/kzge1Z. Or RSVP for the morning event here: https://goo.gl/Dvkcck”
