3 events in the RGV to check out this week — December 17 – 23, 2018

1. December 17 – Toy Drive for LUPE families

9 AM – 6 PM

La Union del Pueblo Entero – LUPE

1601 E Business 83, San Juan, Texas 78589

Event Description:

“This holiday season, help low-income immigrant families and children in the Rio Grande Valley celebrate the holidays by donating new, unwrapped, and non-violent toys ($5 – $15/ages 0 – 10 years old) to our Alton, Mercedes, San Benito, and San Juan LUPE offices by December 19th.

As the year 2018 comes to an end, families and individuals across the United States are preparing to celebrate unity, love, and life. But for millions of immigrant families and individuals, the holiday season is met with much uncertainty about their future.

With a president who has made anti-immigrant policies his priority, millions will spend time with their families and loved ones wondering if a deportation will mean that there will be one, or several, empty chairs at the table next holiday season.

That is why this holiday season, we ask you to join our efforts to show immigrant families in the Rio Grande Valley that we value, cherish, and love them.

As part of our effort to bring joy to those most vulnerable, we ask that you join us in making this holiday season a celebration of unity by donating to our Toy Drive.

Can’t donate toys? Help by contributing $5, $10, or $15 and Santa’s elves will do the shopping.

2. December 19 – Sunset Geocaching

4:30 PM – 5:30 PM

McAllen Nature Center
4101 West Business 83, McAllen, Texas 78501

Event description:

“Geocaching is a new-age scavenger hunt! Geocaches are small, enclose capsules hidden in strange places, that are located with a smartphone or handheald GPS. Some geocaches can be as small as a thimble, and others as big as a lunchbox!

All you need is a smartphone (and to download the app) in order to find geocaches around the RGV, around the country, and around the world! The device will take you close to the cache, but then it’s searching with the eyes from there! It is a fun way to get the whole family outdoors, no matter where you are.

In the event of rain or extreme temperatures, the program will be cancelled and the site will be closed.

Park Admission is a $1/person suggested donation. This program is provided free of charge.”
